THE ENVIRONMENT
Loss of Biodiversity
Biodiversity, or biological diversity, is the set of all existing living beings, which includes all plants, animals and microorganisms on Earth. And it is precisely this diversity and the interaction between these different species that makes our planet so special. As the UN website explains, the air we breathe, the food we eat, the energy we use and the materials we need for all purposes, they are all results of the interaction of this biodiversity. Without plants, for example, we would not have oxygen. Without bees and other insects, we would have no crops, we would have no food. Without fungus we would not have the decomposition and recycling of materials.
But we are putting this biological balance at serious risk. According to the UNO “about 25% of all animal and plant species in the world are threatened with extinction and most of this is due to human action.
